Windows Vista and the Home Recording Studio

Updated Jan. 2009 by Jason Johnston

This page is updated to links and updates on using Windows Vista operating system as the center of a home recording studio. The possibilities of the 64 bit Windows based operating system is good new for home recording, as soon as all the companies catch up! Below are some links, tips and hints in regards to software and hardware currently compatible with Windows Vista.

Revolution Audio Canada is an underground retail movement sparking the home studio uprising by selling cool recording technology (mics, software, new and used recording gear), giving helpful one on one studio consultations and hosting affordable and accessible local education. The revolution starts here. The revolution is now.

M-Audio Vista 64 Drivers - Jan 2009 Update:

M-Audio has released quite a number of Windows 64 bit drivers and a few in full release. They are about 50% of the way there at the writing of this. If you are using one of their main interfaces like the firewire Profire series or most of their USB interfaces like the Fast Track pro or the Fast Track Ultra you are in luck. You can find their current update list here:

Cubase 4 64 bit Update for Vista - Nov. 2007

Steinberg has released a Cubase 4.1 64 bit installer for Windows Vista. They call it a "preview" and preliminary reports tell us that it is certainly still in the beta version. If you would like to give it a try and do some beta testing for Steinberg in process, feel free to download it. If you want to have a stable recording system with Cubase, stick with 4.03 and Windows XP Pro or Home.

M-Audio Vista Drivers - July 24 07 Update:

M-Audio has Released a number of Windows Vista 32 bit drivers including all of their Firewire Devices (like the Firewire 410, ProjectMix i/o and Firewire Solo) and also most of their USB devices (like the Fast Track pro, Mobile Pre and Audiophile USB). No PCI card updates as of yet.

Intro to Windows Vista and the Home Studio

Windows Vista is not recommended at the time of this writing. XP Pro is still the most stable windows platform available for the computer based recording studio. Hopefully by the end of the summer 2007 all the audio companies will catch up with the changes and offer compatible interfaces and software. Revolution Audio will be testing Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit with various software and devices this Summer and we'll put up another report on how it goes.

Here is a great video called "Revolutionizing Audio Production " by Cakewalk talking about the benefits of 64 bit computing with Sonar.

  • Our own Windows Vista In-store Testing Computer

Our First Windows Vista Home Premium Computer Just Came in June 2007 and we are testing it for the home studio below:

    The Bunker Studio:
Revolution Rack computer - Intel LGA775 ATX Mainboard, Intel Core 2 2.4 G 1066Mhz 4Mb CPU, 4GB RAM, 1 X 250 GB HD, 1 X 500 GB SATA II Hard drives, Windows Vista Home Premium, Plextor DVDRW PX-800A

June 1: First tests: Windows Home Premium 64bit installed in about 15 minutes - wow! Our first test showed a smoking system in basic operating tasks. We initially went with a Chaintech 7100GS PCI-E video card and it was disappointing, only scoring a 3 in the Vista speed report. We are waiting for our replacement Video card and let you know how it goes. The trick is finding a fast card, reasonably priced without a noisy fan....

June 5: We replaced with Chaintech video card with the ASUS passive EN8600GT SILENT/HTDP/256M video card and are much happier. It takes up two PCI slot spaces, but the performance/cooling is amazing.

June 9: Loading in the software we realize pretty quickly that we are a few months ahead of the game, if we want to use our full suite of Steinberg and Native Instrument plug-ins. Successfully loaded: Cubase 4, Sonar 6, the UAD Card, Edirol UA-25 initially for testing. Mostof the software instruments from Steinberg and some from Native Instruments do not yet have installers that work with Vista. The Pro-Tools update for vista and the M-Audio drivers are a couple months away it seems. If someone was primarily using Cubase or Sonar just for audio recording with a couple plug-ins, it would be fine. For us, we want to be able to run our full range of software instruments so that we can load up older projects on the new machine. The 3rd party drivers are not there yet.

June 13: We decided to make the Vista machine "dual boot" for now. Partitioning the drive and running mainly Windows XP Pro and then Vista mostly for testing purposes until the drivers catch up.

June 20: RME Fireface 800 is working fine in the dual boot setup in both Windows Vista and XP Pro

More updates Coming soon....thanks to Will (the Milkman) Snodgrass for being the installer/tester of the new Vista computer here at Revolution Audio
